I have that last live DVD of Metheny's with Antonio on drums, and his drumming and his sound are really great. I wouldn't say I LOVE his playing, but some of his improvisations are really incredible.

Personally, I'm not into that left-foot-cowbell-multi-limbed-fiasco stuff. It doesn't do it for me.

You know, Pat Metheny being the "one-man show" he is, does not give too much room for any of his musicians. He needs musicians who will blend into his style of guitar playing.

I'd like to see Antonio Sanchez with a group that brings out his capabilities, more of a Latin jazz band, where he can use his knowledge to its fullest.

Imagine Antonio with Michel Camilo, with Chick Corea, with Arturo Sandoval, or one of these musicians who can relate to Antonio's complexities.

Just found out that the cover story in the May issue of Modern Drummer will be on Antonio Sanchez ! He should reveal some very interesting things about his playing in this interview. Looking forward to it !

I liked Metheney with DeJohnette, they realled meshed well. Jack's solo album with PM and Herbie Hancock is one of my all time fave recordings...and what a concert...on DVD too, it's a must own.

But I like Wertico's playing with PM better too. I thought his ride playing was outstanding and fit the music perfectly, if he had played the BD a bunch, it would have cluttered the guitar timbre. The light snare/ride stuff was great. And his stamina is pretty incredible, some of those patterns were pretty intricate and blazing.

I'm not a big fan of Paul's "out" playing, too wanky and spastic for the sake of being spastic.

Yesterday I did something I hadn't done in a long time which is...go in a record store....and shuffle through CDs and listening stations. I scanned the new Metheny group "The way up", and at a first listen, the sound of the album is FABULOUS, and a bit different than previous PMG releases which to me basically all sounded the same. Pat even uses a distorted guitar!?! Antonio sounded great (superb ride sound).

And talking about MD, I also went in the mag section and shuffled through the last issue (another thing that goes back to the previous century...). I was surprised (well, nowadays maybe not) to see a 6-page interview with Chuck Comeau, a local punk teenager here who drums in the band Simple Plan; virtually unknown here, but apparantly big in the US (especially CA). He even started the interview by saying something like he didn't understand why he would be of interest and that he has no good technique and is not a gear guy. They nevertheless did 6 pages. I wonder if real Montreal greats like Paul Brochu (Uzeb, Gino Vanelli), Dominic Messier (Celine Dion) or Magella Cormier (of Virgil calibre), ever got that type of coverage in MD??

So I guess I'm good for another 10 years til my next MD shuffling...

I could not agree with you more about MD not even trying to write about some of Canada's best !

I believe, everything today, works with Record companies pushing their artists, managers making sure magazines get the press releases and CDs out to the media.

The drummers you mention are some of my favourites too. But, take a good look: Paul Brochu does not have the time to promote himself, and, Magella has never really tried decent promotion. These guys are the best, not only in Quebec, but world-class as well.

In todays world, nobody takes the time to do a little research to see what's happening ! You know, Brochu, Cormier, Messier, etc have all played the Montreal Drum Fest, and they would be killers at the MD fest. I hadthe chance to see Paul Brochu play at the Yamaha Groove night last year at the NAMM show. He played at an evening filled with International drummers. Paul was at his best !

Many Canadian drummers have the talent to play anywhere in the world. Take David Langguth. If he ever was chosen to play the MD fest, he would floor everyone in the audience.

Maybe one day. I know a couple of guys in Montreal who are working on getting Canadian drummers known in the States. We must never give up !

And just take Antonio Sanchez, our topic. He left Mexico to get an international name for himself. All is possible !

I believe that Antonio is taking it to another level... but it's tough to compare with El Negro.

Horacio has got the pure Cuban independance in drumming that comes from his childhood.

Antonio is more a musician that is exploring new heights in experimenting with the clave and doing things that most latin drummers would not even touch in their daily practicing. In a clinic, he will show how complex and dark his playing has become, but, also shows that you cannot expect to play that way with a band ! He has to choose the right grooves that match the band's style of playing.

Like on the MD festival DVD, Antonio jokes after showing a triple clave: Don't try this at home !
